In every Look Back, we examine a comic book issue from 10/25/50/75 years ago (plus a wild card every month with a fifth week in it). This time around, we head to June 1974 for a crossover between the Avengers and the Fantastic Four that saw Qucksilver and Crystal getting married in the home of the Inhumans.
A notable thing that you need to keep in mind before we look at this 1974 crossover between Avengers #127 (by Steve Englehart, Sal Buscema, and Joe Staton), and Fantastic Four #150 (by Gerry Conway, Rich Buckler, and Joe Sinnott). The first is a refresher on the so-called “Marvel Method” (so-called because it existed long before Marvel Comics was a thing, but Marvel became such a big deal, and Stan Lee such a public figure, that it became most famous as “The Marvel Method”), where a writer (working with or without an artist) comes up with a plot for a story, the artist then draws that plot, and then the writer adds dialogue to it. Different writers supplied a different level of detail in their plots. So, for instance, let’s say you had two different writers doing a crossover, depending on the details in each of their plots, there is a very good chance you effectively had four different writers doing your crossover, the two guys plotting and then scripting the two issues, and then the two guys plotting the book as they drew it.
The issue opens with Gorgon showing up to bring the Avengers to the wedding, only to find out that that jerk, Quicksilver (who had told Scarlet Witch that she was essentially dead to him for dating the Vision), had not actually TOLD the Avengers about the wedding, which really angered Gorgon (who was all about family, so to see a guy not tell his own sister he was getting married, it did not sit well)…
