The Energon Universe is taking the next step forward at Skybound (in conjunction with Hasbro), as it finally launches an ongoing G.I. Joe series, produced by the creative team of the Duke miniseries, writer Joshua Williamson, artist Tom Reilly, and colorist Jordie Bellaire. The Energon Universe is the new shared universe featuring Hasbro’s G.I. Joe and Transformers characters. The Transformers launched as an ongoing series last year, but Skybound has played the long game with G.I. Joe, slowly introducing the key players individually in miniseries starring Duke and Cobra Commander, before finally putting out G.I. Joe as an ongoing series in November.
This is separate, of course, from the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero series at Skybound, which is based on the original Marvel G.I. Joe continuity, where Larry Hama continues to write the series he launched for Marvel back in 1982. This new G.I. Joe title will have its own continuity set within the shared Energon Universe.
At the end of Duke’s series, he learns of more Transformers, as General Hawk enlists Duke into forming a special team that can possibly combat forces as powerful as giant robots that can transform into planes and trucks. However, they will also have to deal with Cobra, and that is the basis for the new series, which also will be introducing NEW character, as well as new spins on classic characters.
