Archie Mondays: Archie Looks to Its Own Horror Past for a Halloween Spectacular

Every Monday, CBR shares a preview of the newest Archie Comics releases that week, plus occasional spotlights on the latest Archie news. This time around, we’re looking at two Halloween-themed comics, this year’s Archie Halloween Spectacular, as well as the Archie Jumbo Comics Digest #344.The first story we’ll preview is “Monster Mash-Up!” from Archie Halloween Spectacular, by writer Tom DeFalco, artists Steven Butler and Jim Amash, colorist Glenn Whitmore and letterer Jack Morelli. Tom DeFalco, as you may or may not know, got his start in the comic book industry over 50 years ago working at Archie Comics, so he certainly knows his Archie history, and DeFalco knows that for a while there in the early 1960s, Archie Comics really leaned into the macabre a bit, like this creepy alien cover by Archie legend, Harry Lucey, in 1961’s Archie #123…So in “Monster Mash-Up,” the mischievous spirits known as Trick and Treat visit a Halloween party that Archie and the gang are attending, and torments them with versions of the classic horror characters from the 1960s, including that creepy-looking alien from the cover of Archie #123!
