In the Marvel Universe, the idea of fighting fire with fire can make for some interesting alliances, like the current one between a time-traveling conqueror and his mortal enemies, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. This pact was formed in the pages of Avengers #2 when Kang recruited the titular heroes to protect him from another intrepid band of champions, The Twilight Court, who hounded and almost mortally wounded him in last year’s Timeless one-shot by writer Jed MacKay and artists Greg Land, Kev Walker, and Mark Bagley. In Avengers #7, the opening to the current “Twilight Dreaming arc” by MacKay and artist C.F. Villa, the Twilight Court came for Kang while all the Avengers, except for the Vision, were stuck in a hellish world created by the entity known as Nightmare. In the latest installment of CBR’s Earth’s Mightiest Spoilers, an exclusive series of post-game interviews about each issue of Avengers, CBR spoke with MacKay about Avengers #8, where Vision and Scarlet Witch try to hold the line against the Twilight Court. He discussed the inspiration for the creation of the Court, and Marvel shared a first look at artist Francesco Mortarino and colorist Federico Blee’s art for Avengers #9.Jed MacKay: That was the intention! When I was setting out to put together an Avengers team back when all this began, I liked to look at them as mythic figures [or] totemic archetypes — the Star, the Engineer, et al. While I was doing that, I began to wonder what that set of titles would look like from another angle — the same archetypes but rivals and potential villains, and the Twilight Court was born. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to take those characters and debut them in Timeless (2022) as a preview of what is to come for Avengers. As Myrddin and Kang have realized, the secret of the Missing Moment can only be attained after heroes have confronted the Tribulation Events, and Myrddin decided that in order to achieve his goal, he would create his own heroes.
