For more than fifty years combined, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchises have enthralled fans with their respective tales of teams of color-coded heroes. Over the years, audiences have watched as each franchise has shifted and evolved in its own way across numerous iterations.
Unsurprisingly, the vastly different trajectories of these two properties have more in common than they would seem to on the surface, making them perfect for a crossover event. And, while the original TV crossover was anything but what fans were hoping for, BOOM! Studios and IDW Publishing more than made up for their shortcomings with not one but two different comic book crossovers of their own. Not only are these infinitely better than the ’90s events before them but they are regarded as some of the best IP crossovers in general, even if not every individual issue manages to stand out.
The basic premise behind Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was that Tommy had infiltrated the Foot Clan in secret to rescue another young teen who was caught up in their schemes. By never mentioning this to the other Power Rangers, Tommy left them to assume he had either been captured or gone Green With Evil all over again. Overall, the second issue of the first comic book crossover does little more than spell all of that out. Even giving readers their first glimpse of the Shredder in his Green Ranger form, which is some of the best fan-service of all time, doesn’t make up for an otherwise forgettable entry in the series, especially when readers don’t even get to see him in action.
