For years, Craig Yoe has delighted comic book fans with wonderful collections of offbeat comic books from the past. In a CBR exclusive announcement, Yoe is at it again with his latest trade paperback from his Yoe Books line, in conjunction with Dark Horse Books, a collection of Charlton’s short-lived but amazingly bizarre 1950s science fiction western comic book series, Space Western Comics, in a book titled Space Western Comics: Cowboys vs. Aliens, Commies, Dinosaurs, and Nazis! The trade paperback contains all six issues of Space Western Comics that were originally released in 1952 and 1953 and starred Spurs Jackson, an Arizona rancher who is captured (along with some of his ranch hands) by some Martian invaders. Once on Mars, Spurs and his men overthrow the evil Martians and return control of the planet to Queen Thula, who names Jackson the Prime Minister of Mars. Jackson and his friends go on a number of other science fiction adventures over the course of the series. This new collection has them all, along with a “lost” story, and an introduction by Yoe.The early 1950s were a strange period in comic book history, where the Comics Code Authority had not yet come into existence, so comic book companies were trying all sorts of different genres, and companies like Charlton would frequently re-title series to try new ideas, even strange ones like mixing science fiction and westerns together.
