EXCLUSIVE: The X-Men’s Fight Against the Fall of X Reunites Kitty Pryde and Magik

Illyana Rasputin, the X-Man known as Magik, like a number of the X-Men, had been scattered across the Marvel Universe during The Fall of X, but she has returned just in time to join the X-Men’s great assault on Earth to regain control from the evil anti-mutant organization, Orchis, and in this CBR exclusive preview of next week’s X-Men #32, Magik reunites with her best friend, Kate “Kitty” Pryde, who has now become the hero known as Shadowkat, but as the preview shows, Magik is not the same mutant who disappeared at the start of The Fall of X.X-Men #32 is from writer Gerry Duggan, artist/colorist Phil Noto, and letterer Clayton Cowles, and takes part of the X-Men’s assault on Earth. One of the central problems for the X-Men during the Fall of X is that Orchis altered the special medicine that the X-Men had provided to the rest of the world (the basis of the economy for the X-Men’s mutant nation, Krakoa). Orchis could now kill any human who had ever used the mutant medicine, which was basically all of humanity, so when forced to determine whether to exile all of mutantkind to Mars or see millions of humans killed, Charles Xavier agreed to exile the mutants. He was shocked, though, when the mutants all vanished, seemingly killed instead of teleported (as it turns out, the mutants were just teleported into different places). A handful of mutants (the ones who were trained to resist Xavier’s commands) escaped, and had been fighting Orchis from the underground, while hiding their mutant abilities. In X-Men #31, Synch of the X-Men successfully nullified the Orchis trigger in the medicine (at a horrific personal cost), so Orchis no longer had humanity held hostage, and now the X-Men are free to attack Orchis openly. In the preview pages, we see Magik rejoin the X-Men in an attack on Orchis. Emma Frost, coordinating the attacks with her telepathy, is shocked to discover that Magik didn’t die during the Hellfire Gala Orchis attack that seemingly wiped out most of the mutant population of Earth.
