How a Thor Creative Team Mocked Their Former Spider-Man Editor

Welcome to the 919th installment of Comic Book Legends Revealed, a column where we examine three comic book myths, rumors and legends and confirm or debunk them. This is a special “basing characters on real life people” edition of CBLR. In the second legend, we look at how a former Spider-Man creative team poked fun at their former Spider-Man editor in their later run on Thor. Something I occasionally do with Comic Book Legends Revealed is to have theme weeks. A lot of times, it’s just stuff like, “Hey, an Avengers movie is out, maybe I can do three Avengers-related legends this week!” or “The great Neal Adams passed away, I should do a legends theme week in his honor.” Other times, though, it’s more like a case of, “Oh, I have two legends involving Creator X, I guess I should find a third and make it a theme week!” The issue with that latter type of situation is that what if you have two themed legends, but can’t find a third? Especially one where there’s a very specific theme that only works if you can get a legend involving Writer X doing Thing Y. That’s where I stood with this “basing characters on real life people” theme, so I’ve actually sat on these first two legends for over SIXTEEN YEARS while waiting for a proper third legend to go with them, and the other day, I found that third legend (amusingly enough, the third legend was set to run on its own, but then I realized, “Wait, that could go with those other two!”).Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz made their triumphant debut on Amazing Spider-Man with Amazing Spider-Man #252, a minor issue with no impact on the history of Spider-Man whatsoever…
