In case you were unfamiliar with his background, the brilliant comic book writer, J.M. DeMatteis (who was voted by CBR readers a couple of years back as one of the 25 greatest comic book writers of all-time), was a music critic in the 1970s, right around the same time that he broke into comic books at DC and Marvel. He was even featured in Rolling Stone, and it was the following negative review of the Grateful Dead’s 1980 album, Go to Heaven, that led to DeMatteis stopping his music review career, as a number of Deadheads weren’t thrilled with his review, and he realized that he really didn’t want to write negative reviews anymore….
In Captain America #268 (by DeMatteis, Mike Zeck, and John Beatty), Steve Rogers is on a date with his girlfriend, Bernie Rosenthal (who does not yet know that Steve was suspended in animation back in World War II, so he grew up in the Great Depression), and they just got back from seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Steve has a problem with Indiana Jones in the film, as he believes that he is an amoral character, while Bernie just thought that the film was fun (of course, things then get weird when Bernie tells Steve that she loves him, and he doesn’t recipcrotate)…
