This is “Nothing is Better,” a feature spotlighting classic older comic books. This time around, we look at how Harry Osborn’s 1990s stint as Green Goblin was the most unsettling and affecting of them all for Spider-Man. In the current volume of Amazing Spider-Man, we’re clearly headed for a ticking timebomb of SOME sort of problem with Norman Osborn, Peter Parker’s boss, friend and mentor, who had his evil nature expunged from him a while back, leading to Osborn becoming a superhero himself, the Gold Goblin, and becoming a protective father figure for Peter. Recently, though, Norman’s sins have returned to him, and while it has not yet manifested in an outright return to villainy, there are clearly some cracks beginning to show. When they likely finally do, it will be interesting to see how hard it hits, as Peter and Norman HAVE grown quite close in recent years. Many moons ago, I debunked the longstanding comic book legend about Steve Ditko (that had even fooled John Romita Sr., who followed Ditko as the artist on Amazing Spider-Man) not wanting Norman Osborn to be revealed as the Green Goblin. That was, in fact, who Ditko had intended to be the costumed villain. However, Ditko, presumably, had his own plans on when he would reveal that information, and likely not the moment he left the series.
