Love is hard, especially for a young woman coming from a complicated family background and accompanied by the apparent apparition of Saint Valentine since childhood. This premise kickstarts the original graphic novelLunar New Year Love Story, created by Eisner Award winner Gene Luen Yang and celebrated children’s book illustrator LeUyen Pham. Published by First Second Books this January, just in time for the Lunar New Year, the story follows Valentina, whose perspective on love has become increasingly jaded, only to find herself on the path to escape her past heartbreak with some magical help.In an exclusive interview with CBR, Lunar New Year Love Story creators Gene Luen Yang and LeUyen Pham share the origins of this romantic comedy, explain the cultural connections and underlying themes to the story and tease what readers can expect when their original graphic novel.Gene Luen Yang: The idea came from my wife, Theresa. She and I have been married for 23 years and, when we were dating, she went through this phase where she just really hated Valentine’s Day because she thought it was a corporate scam, but I really wanted to celebrate Valentine’s Day with her because I was really into her. My workaround was to celebrate Lunar New Year with her. Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day are almost always within a week of each other, sometimes they’re even on the same day. What I would do is draw Lunar New Year cards for her where dragons were in the shapes of hearts, and we would go to Lunar New Year dinner. It was just a way to get around that whole bias around Valentine’s Day.
