Between his collaborations with Matt Kindt on Dark Horse Comics’ Crimson Flower and Mind MGMNT: Bootleg and his solo comics, The Freak and Static, Matt Lesniewski has created some of the most idiosyncratic, eye-catching, and memorable comics in recent years. His latest comic, Faceless and the Family, might be his most ambitious project yet. Set on the desolate and dangerous Hand Planet, the series follows the titular Faceless as he travels to opulent Finger Cities and meets several travelers along the way.Lesniewski originally published Faceless and the Family as a graphic novel that he crowd-funded on Zoop, but now he’s serializing it with Oni Press. In an interview with CBR, the cartoonist discussed the project’s origins, his collaboration with Oni, and what fans can expect from Faceless’ surreal journey.Matt Lesniewski: The initial idea came to me just after watching the 2015 movie The Invitation, all in one lump of a concept. If you haven’t seen the movie, the majority of it is all set in one giant, ominous house where old friends meet for a dinner party. I was struck with a concept after watching it about a story where a lone wanderer discovers an abandoned house and enters it with no objective at all. We don’t even know their backstory. Then, another outcast from another sector of this wasteland would encounter the house and join the original character. Eventually, a crew of misfits would form a new type of family and work through their problems in the house. There’d be ups [and] downs, [and] some not-so-friendly people would come by the house, but that’s mostly all I originally saw Faceless being. Obviously, it changed a lot since then, but that’s how things started.
