One of the most iconic characters to ever emerge from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is back in the pages of Marvel Comics, and his new lease on life is already nothing but trouble.
“The Death Stone Saga Chapter Two” finds Nick Fury spending another restless night thinking back to his time with fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson. While Fury ponders what his recurring dreams of Coulson’s death, and life, might mean, another ominous figure is getting to the bottom of that question in the waking world. As it turns out, Phil Coulson is now back among the living thanks to the seventh Infinity Stone, the Death Stone, which has somehow found its way to where he was laid to rest. Unfortunately for Coulson, the first person to reach him upon his return is none other than Kyle Richmond, better known as Nighthawk, who has anything but the former’s best interests at heart.
Phil Coulson wouldn’t make his Marvel Comics debut until 2011’s Battle Scars #1 by writers Chris Yost, Cullen Bunn and Matt Fraction and artist Scot Eaton. While the Coulson of the comics was remarkably similar to the MCU original, the former’s trajectory was decidedly different in a myriad of ways. During the events of Secret Empire, Coulson was shot dead by Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, who was dedicated to standing by Captain America against all else despite the Avenger having been replaced by a twisted duplicate.
