Since the 2023 Hellfire Gala, the X-Men and all of Mutantkind have suffered some major losses and turmoil. Between the Fall of X heralding the end of the Krakoan Era, to the Sabretooth Wars, and all the other in-progress tangled and convoluted plots, it’s hard to keep track of who is doing what and where. However, one group of X-Men have a very clear mission — a desperate romp through time to foil Moira MacTaggert in her most terrifying form yet, and save Krakoa in the process.Written by Steve Foxe, illustrated by Lynne Yoshii, Bernard Chang, Javier Pina and David Baldeón, with colors by Frank Martin, and letters by VC’s Cory Petit, the Dead X-Men — Jubilee, Prodigy, Frenzy, Cannonball, Dazzler, and their leader Aksani — are on a quest to undo Orchis’ damage done to Krakoa, and mutantkind. The key to this quest is to stop the carnage before it can even start. If they are to successfully stop Moira, then they will have to chase her all the way back to the beginning — to her very first life. Unfortunately, their mission may already be futile. This isn’t entirely Foxe’s fault, per sé. All current Marvel Comics series, especially those connected to the X-Men, are so vast, weighty, and complicated. It makes sense that Dead X-Men #3 would follow suit. This story arc, right from the beginning, has set itself up as something far more complex than a classic Back to the Future-style story. Dead X-Men #3 is a trip through the past, to specifically hunt down a rogue version of Moira and track the origins of the original timeline Moira’s path to treason. However, it’s all been in the name of sparing the present-day Krakoa of its current fate. At this point, Krakoa’s end already appears to be a foregone conclusion. This adds dramatic irony, but also lessens the impact of this otherwise solid cast of characters and their actions. It’s a shame, as this team of young mutants has certainly received the short end of the stick since the events of the 2023 Hellfire Gala. Dead X-Men #3, and the entirety of its run so far, hasn’t been a lost opportunity. However, this series could have benefited from being a little simpler, and perhaps an issue or two longer, to better pace out its storytelling.
