REVIEW: Image Comics’ Creepshow Holiday Special 2023 #1

Image Comics is wishing everybody an early season’s greeting with the Creepshow Holiday Special 2023 #1, showcasing two Christmas-themed one-shot short comics in a blood-curdling double bill. “Christmas Man” is written by Daniel Kraus and illustrated by Jonathan Wayshak, with colors by Adriano Lucas and letters by Pat Brosseau. “Package Thieves” is penned by James Asmus with art by Letizia Cadonici, colors by Francesco Segala, and letters, once again, by Pat Brosseau. The classic horror anthology returns after a revival earlier this year, prompted by the success of the Shudder streaming series based on the original 1982 Stephen King special.Creepshow Holiday Special 2023 #1 kicks off with its first story, “Christmas Man.” Three elder brothers torment their youngest sister on Christmas Eve, telling her a tall tale that Santa Claus is pursued by a malevolent Christmas Man, whose rage is only assuaged by the offering of Christmas stockings at each fireplace. In “Package Thieves,” two enterprising young women make easy money by swiping online deliveries off the doorsteps of unsuspecting people. The pair think of themselves as the perpetrators of a victimless crime; however, somebody else disagrees and takes matters into their own hands, starting by leaving grisly surprises for them around town.Asmus’s short story “Package Thieves” has a much less concentrated sense of time and place, giving it less initial intensity but more space to develop its themes and ideas. The premise is inventive and quite fun, keying into a common irritation and escalating it into a capital crime, a la Hannibal Lecter. The gradual escalation of the story is excellent, slowly ramping up the tension until the breaking point, which explodes into a gruesome finale.
