REVIEW: Marvel’s Avengers Annual 2023

Agatha Harkness has been manipulating the heroes of the Marvel Universe. Throughout the Contest of Chaos event, Agatha has been pitting hero against hero at nexus points of magic. She’s been harnessing the magical energy created from these conflicts to forge a new Darkhold. Agatha believes she’s the only person who can control and contain chaos magic, and this new Darkhold will be her way of doing so. In Avengers Annual 2023, written by Stephanie Phillips with art by Alberto Foche and Álvaro López, colors by Raúl Angulo, and letters by VC’s Cory Petit, the Avengers find themselves battling heroic friends while trying to thwart the creation of Agatha’s new Darkhold. The resulting issue is a fun battle and a relatively satisfying conclusion to the Contest of Chaos event. The issue opens with the Avengers arriving at the Bermuda Triangle, where Clea, Spider-Man, and Jessica Jones have determined Agatha must be. Upon arrival, the heroes discover that a variety of ships that must have gone down in the Bermuda Triangle over the years have risen to the surface. The team begins to inspect the ships, looking for the missing heroes taken by Agatha and for Agatha. The Avengers quickly find the previous victors of the Chaos Battles, and an all-out brawl among friends begins. The bulk of this issue consists of all the heroes in conflict with each other, with Scarlet Witch and Captain Marvel eventually splintering off to fight Agatha. While this is the conclusion of the Contest of Chaos event, it still ends on a major cliffhanger, which does leave the story feeling incomplete.Foche and López handle the art for this issue and create a truly bombastic battle. The location itself is automatically intriguing, and the pair create an awesome battlefield with the waves, ships, rain, and whirlpool in the center. Each hero gets a moment to shine, and large splash images will highlight multiple conflicts at once. The geography of the battlefield is never confusing, and the environment is always additive to the fight. Critically, it’s always easy to discern who everyone in a given panel is at a glance.
