REVIEW: Titans Beast World Tour: Atlantis

The Titans’ Beast World crossover continues to wreak havoc throughout the DC Universe, as the spores of Garro (formerly known as the heroic Beast Boy) transform humans into vicious animal hybrids. Unfortunately, the meta-humans of the world have proven to be vulnerable to this as well, with numerous heroes and villains proving susceptible to biological attacks. Fortunately, the superpowered individuals who have not been transformed stand ready and willing to protect the unaffected citizens of the world, although this has resulted in many of the world’s best (and worst) heroes being changed into out-of-control, animalistic versions of themselves. The epic descends to new depths as Garro’s spores reach Aquaman’s undersea kingdom in Titans Beast World Tour: Atlantis. As expected, the King of the Seven Seas himself is on hand to meet the attack head-on, as are a few other nautical heroes, including Aqualad and Mera. The book contains three different stories, continuing the trend of the tie-ins thus far, with each focusing on different heroes (and in one case, a villain) associated with the underwater hero. Unfortunately, the majority of the tales presented in the issue do little to advance the overall story, even though there are a few stand-out moments. The second story of the three, the aptly titled “Just When You Thought it was Safe to Go Back in the Water,” focuses more on villains and antiheroes, and is, interestingly enough, the most intriguing of the stories included in the collection. This tale, scripted by the venerable Frank Tieri, has a more interesting cast than those introduced in the other stories and features characters who come across as larger than life as opposed to the bland figures seen in the rest of the issue.
