Spider-Boy’s Most Comical Villain is Also a Major Threat

With Marvel fans being introduced to Spider-Boy back in April, interest surrounding the character has only grown. While it may seem he’s destined to be nothing more than a Spider-Man sidekick, the character offers far more in his debut issue. Spider-Boy #1 delivers the start of what promises to be an epic origin story for the character. But the main story isn’t the only interesting development involving Marvel’s newest webslinger, as there’s plenty of fun to be had in the issue’s back-up feature as well. The story “Balloonacy” from Spider-Boy #1 (by Dan Slott, Ty Templeton, Dee Cunniffe, and VC’s Joe Caramanga) introduces readers to Professor Emilio Helio, aka the Balloon Man. Despite the comical nature of this new villain, he isn’t a threat to take lightly. Squirrel Girl’s immediate reaction to Helio aside, it’s very possible that there is more to the Balloon Man than the silliness he presents on the surface. To be compared to Magneto (who is historically one of Marvel’s most dangerous characters) is a far bigger deal than it may seem on the outset. Controlling an element has proven to be extremely potent in the Marvel Universe. While Helio may not wind up posing much of a threat to Spider-Boy in this story, there’s no telling how he may evolve in upcoming stories.
