The new X-Men relaunch that is happening starting next month, with the debut of X-Men #1 by Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman, is titled “From the Ashes,” and that is a reference to how the X-Men are starting over as a line of comics following the epic Krakoan Age, where the world’s mutants all ruled on a mutant island nation known as Krakoa for the past few years. Cut off from humanity, the X-Men prospered, but that distance soon grew into distrust, and the anti-mutant organization known as Orchis was able to manipulate the world into supporting its villainous attacks on mutants. Now, Orchis is defunct (but not forgotten), and Krakoa is gone (as are the vast majority of the world’s mutants), and the remaining X-Men, and mutants in general, have to integrate back into human society. One X-Man, though, is not willing to do that, and they have decide to corrupt the principles of Krakoa as a new villain known as the Krakoan!
The Krakoan will make their debut in the first issue of NYX, by the creative team of Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Franceso Mortarino, and it will come out on July 24th.
So this book, more than any of the others, is the most distinct from the Krakoan Age, so, of course, this is the book that has to deal with the memories of Krakoa in the most direct fashion (obviously every title is dealing with the after-effects of the Krakoan Age in their own ways).
