This Fan-Favorite Harry Potter Character Was Much More Interesting in the Books

The Wizarding World has given fans many characters synonymous with the fantasy genre. Characters like Harry Potter are never far from the minds of anyone discussing their favorite book protagonists, even those who don’t read all that much. The movies only further solidified them in the public’s minds. However, the biggest problem with those movies is that they don’t have enough time to flesh out the characters. The original series did a magnificent job conveying the characters’ overall plot and core. However, as with all media adaptations, some parts had to be left out for the sake of the overall plot. One major character suffered because of this, and that was Hermione Granger. While she is still as relevant and impressive as ever in the films, parts of her story never got highlighted, diminishing what she represented in the books. The cruel way in which they questioned her, coupled with Crouch freeing Winky to keep up appearances despite knowing it would break her heart, firmly cemented in Hermione’s mind that house-elves were an oppressed people in need of protection. For the rest of the school year, Hermione began efforts to try and help the house-elves living at Hogwarts, culminating in her founding the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, otherwise known as S.P.E.W. She attempted on numerous occasions to free the elves working at Hogwarts, or at the very least trying to make them see how they were little more than slaves the way they carried on. Unfortunately, she underestimated just how ingrained the idea of noble servitude was in the house-elves, and her efforts ended up insulting them rather than helping.
