Two Characters Inherited Sentry’s Legacy, But They Couldn’t Be More Different

From the moment Bob Reynolds set foot in the pages of Marvel Comics, his presence as The Sentry was one that simply could not be missed, nor can the weight of his untimely demise. This is especially true now that The Sentry’s impossible powers have begun springing up all across the globe in the hands of otherwise ordinary people seemingly at random. As shocking as that may be, it is no surprise that only a select few of them have shown any real proficiency with the abilities thrust upon them, nor that only one of them is anywhere close to becoming a superhero. The Sentry #2 (by Jason Loo, Luigi Zagaria, David Cutler, Arthur Hesli, and VC’s Joe Caramagna) opens with Jessica Jones and Misty Knight continuing their investigation into the various individuals who have suddenly developed what appear to be the Sentry’s old powers. Unfortunately for them, the trail to the latest of these unsuspecting figures has already gone cold by the time they catch up with the end of it.Introduced in the prior issue, Ryan Topper is, for all intents and purposes, a normal teenager whose aspirations far outweigh his current experience and ability. At least, that was the case until his Sentry powers manifested, allowing Ryan to become something greater than he could have ever achieved on his own. Like everyone else who now commands some amount of the Sentry’s abilities, Ryan saw a vision of Bob Reynolds in action at the time those powers manifested, specifically that of the original Sentry squaring off against the Hulk in brutal hand-to-hand combat.
