Was the Legion of Super-Heroes’ Karate Kid Accidentally an Orphan?

Welcome to the 913th installment of Comic Book Legends Revealed, a column where we examine three comic book myths, rumors and legends and confirm or debunk them. This time, in our second legend, learn whether Karate Kid was accidentally depicted as an orphan in a Legion of Super-Heroes story when he was meant to have parents..When I first started doing Comic Book Legends Revealed, almost twenty years ago (?!!?), it’s interesting how certain stories that I covered then, I probably wouldn’t even bother covering now, since they’re so much more well known now. For instance, my very first Comic Book Legends Revealed ever was about how Jim Shooter started writing comic books when he was still a young teenager. It’s not that no one knew that back then, as obviously a number of people did, but it wasn’t nearly as well known as it is now (that goes for most comic book trivia period, really). As noted, not only was Shooter bold enough to just write and draw a comic and actually get hired, but he even added FOUR new members to the Legion in the story! As noted, one of the members was the Karate Kid, who later received his own ongoing series in the mid-1970s at the tail end of the Kung Fu boom in American pop culture (that craze helped iconic Legion of Super-Heroes writer, Paul Levitz, get his first writing gig, on the Karate Kid series). Shooter felt that the Legion lacked action characters. He thought that everyone’s powers were too passive. They just pointed and fired a blast from their fingers or whatever. So that’s why Shooter loved the idea of Karate Kid, as he was a character who was inherently physical. He had to fight and punch and kick people. No passive powers like walking through walls or turning invisible or reading people’s minds and no energy blasting powers like shooting lightning or firing heat beams.
