This is Gotta Serve Somebody, a brand-new feature where I look at when comic book guest stars get a certain “push” in other titles. This is basically the opposite concept of my existing feature, Nobody Has Any Respect, about when guest stars get treated POORLY when they guest star. Today, we look at how Deathstroke the Terminator was given an oversized role in the epic early 1990s Superman crossover, “Panic in the Sky.”Generally speaking, the attitude that DC took in the years directly following Crisis on Infinite Earths was that superheroes had existed for decades, but at the same time, they weren’t really UNITED. When DC rebooted its continuity, it chose to have Superman be sort of distant from the rest of the DC Universe (he was no longer a member of the Justice League of America), and Wonder Woman was a brand-new superhero in the DC Universe. That distance between the heroes changed in Legends, which led to a relaunched Justice League series, and then later the Invasion! crossover event, where the heroes of the DC Universe had to fight alongside each other to combat an organized invasion by an alien collective. In 1990, the New Titans “celebrated” their tenth anniversary with the epic storyline, “Titans Hunt,” where someone is hunting down the TItans one by one, and only Nightwing avoided capture. He has to team up with Deathstroke the Terminator to save his friends. It’s an amazing story that really kicked the series out of a bit of a doldrums it was in after George Perez left the series for the second time. However, right before that story kicked off in New Titans #71, Marv Wolfman first did a one-off issue of the series with guest artists Steve Ervin and Will Blyburg spotlighting Deathstroke the Terminator on a mission (with his best friend and aide, Major Wintergreen, narrating the story through a journal).
