When Udon Joined Robotech’s WildStorm Relaunch

Welcome to the 33rd installment of Nostalgia Snake, a look at 2000s revivals of 1980s properties, revivals now so old they’re also quite nostalgic (hence, the snake of nostalgia eating itself.) This week, we revisit the official launch of Robotech’s WildStorm era. And if you have any suggestions for the future, let me hear them. Just contact me on Twitter.
As covered previously, Robotech is an Americanized version of the 1982 anime Super Dimension Fortress Macross, developed by screenwriter Carl Macek for American production company Harmony Gold. Because the weekly Macross series lacked the required sixty-five episodes for a syndicated series, the show was paired with other 1980s anime properties Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA to create an 85-episode series. The three series represent three time periods in the Robotech canon, explaining away their disparate origins as a multi-generational story.
The timing seemed to be right, as Harmony Gold was also planning a direct-to-DVD release, a sequel to the original show entitled Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles. The new comic book series, hypothetically, could tie in with the 1980s cartoon and the upcoming movie. Harmony Gold creative director Tommy Yune would plot the stories, announced as prequels to the 1980s animated series, jettisoning the previous tie-in material, with Jay Faerber providing scripts.
