This is “Got Me a Secret,” a feature where I spotlight notable instances of comic book characters revealing their secret identities to people (or people figuring out the secret identities themselves). Today, in a bit of a “crossover” with my feature “When We First Met”, where we spotlight notable comic book firsts, we look at the first time that a superhero discovered Spider-Man’s secret identity. Few comic book characters have so perfectly encapsulated the changing views of superhero secret identities than Spider-Man, as he debuted at a time when secret identities were considered sacrosanct, but over a period of time, more and more characters learned who he was, to the point where he was living with his wife and Aunt (who knew his secret identity) in Avengers Tower with a bunch of superheroes who all knew his secret identity. Then he revealed his secret identity to the whole world during Civil War!When the Black Cat made her original debut, she was intended to be essentially Spider-Man’s version of Catwoman, a sexy cat-themed master thief who Spider-Man couldn’t help but be attracted to even as he tried to arrest her. She wasn’t intended to be anything more than a recurring rogue for Spider-Man (in fact, Marv Wolfman originally didn’t even invent her as a SPIDER-MAN rogue), but Roger Stern had her attempt to go straight, and she and Spider-Man even seemed to start a relationship before she went on the run when Spider-Man told her she needed to turn herself in if she wanted to really go straight (ironically, a temporary amnesty had been approved for Black Cat right before she faked her death to get away).
